IELTS General Training Practice Test with an Examiner That Talks Back
Full mock tests for all four sections. A Speaking examiner that asks follow-up questions based on what you actually said. Letters and essays scored on the four official criteria, with feedback built to take you from 6.5 to 7, which for Canada is CLB 8 to CLB 9. Band scores in about a minute.
Start free — one full test 7-day trial · no card requiredLinguaMock.ai is an AI-powered IELTS practice platform. It runs complete, timed IELTS General Training mock tests and scores every section, Speaking and Writing included. Most General Training candidates are working to a fixed number: a CLB level for Express Entry, a visa threshold, a professional body's minimum. Half a band short in one section can cost months. Writing and Speaking are the sections you cannot mark yourself, and that is where LinguaMock.ai is strongest.

IELTS Speaking
IELTS Speaking practice with an examiner who has no script
- 11–14 minutes
- Parts 1, 2 and 3
- Band 0–9
On the exam. Speaking is identical on General Training and Academic. Part 1 is questions about you and familiar topics. Part 2 is a cue card, with one minute to prepare and up to two minutes to speak, followed by questions. Part 3 is a discussion of the ideas behind that topic. The examiner listens the whole time, and the next question depends on what you just said.
Most online speaking practice is a recorded question and a countdown. You answer, it records, and nothing you say changes what comes next. You can do that for months and still freeze when a real examiner asks “Why do you think that is?”
On LinguaMock.ai, the examiner talks back. The cue card is set, as it is on the day. The follow-ups are not: no script, no stock questions, no two conversations alike. It is the closest you can get to sitting opposite an IELTS examiner without paying for a test.
- It follows what you actually said Describe a place you moved to and it asks what you miss about home. Say that shopping online is convenient and it asks what that costs the shops on your high street. Every follow-up comes from your own answer.
- Part 2 the way the exam runs it A cue card, one minute to prepare, up to two minutes to speak. Then come follow-up questions about the talk you just gave.
- Part 3 is where 6.5 becomes 7 The examiner picks up your reasoning, asks you to justify what you just claimed, and keeps going. That is what Fluency and Coherence really measure, and it is the one part of IELTS nobody can memorise. For CLB 9, Speaking needs a 7.
- It feels like the real thing You hear each question spoken aloud and see it on screen, in three timed parts. When test day comes, it will not be your first time.
- Whenever you are ready On your phone or your laptop, before a shift or after midnight. No booking, no app, no tutor's diary to fit around.
What you get back: a Speaking band on the official 0–9 scale with clear feedback on what to fix, in about a minute.
IELTS General Training Writing
IELTS letter and essay checker built for the jump from 6.5 to 7
- 60 minutes
- Task 1 letter + Task 2 essay
- 4 criteria, each banded
On the exam. Task 1 is a letter of at least 150 words in twenty suggested minutes. You get a situation and three bullet points to cover, and the register is set by who you are writing to. Task 2 is an essay of at least 250 words, and it carries twice the weight of Task 1.
For Canada, half a band in Writing is a whole CLB level. Writing 6.5 is CLB 8. Writing 7.0 is CLB 9. CLB 9 in every skill is where Express Entry's language points step up, and where points for combining your language with education or work experience reach their maximum. Visa systems elsewhere set similar bars at 7.
Grammar checkers cannot close that half band, because spelling is rarely what holds a script at 6.5. More often it is a letter in the wrong tone, a bullet point half answered, or an essay whose position never quite develops. LinguaMock.ai's Writing feedback is built around exactly that line.
- Letters marked on register, not just grammar Formal, semi-formal and informal letters each have their own conventions: how you open, how direct you can be, how you close. Get the register wrong and Task Achievement is capped, however clean the English. For a letter, Task Achievement covers tone and all three bullet points, and that is where most Task 1 marks are lost.
- All four criteria, scored separately Task Achievement (Task Response in Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, each with its own band and the reasoning shown. You find out which one is holding you at 6.5, and that changes what you study tomorrow.
- Feedback built to get you to 7 You see which criterion is costing you and what it has to look like at Band 7. A page of corrected commas will not get you to CLB 9. Knowing that your essay argues both sides when the question asked for your opinion will.
- Task 2 marked for the question actually asked General Training essay topics are more everyday than Academic ones, but the marking is the same. No amount of good grammar rescues an answer to a slightly different question.
- Results in about a minute Write, see your bands, fix the weak criterion, and write again the same evening. That loop is how a band moves.
IELTS Listening
IELTS Listening practice tests, full length and heard once
- 30 minutes
- 4 parts
- 40 questions
On the exam. Identical to Academic. Four recordings of rising difficulty: an everyday conversation, a monologue, a discussion between several speakers, and a lecture. Each is heard once. For CLB 9 you need 8.0 in Listening, higher than in any other skill.
- Every question type you will meet on the day Forms, notes and tables to complete, maps and plans to label, flow charts, multiple choice and matching, in full 40-question tests rather than isolated drills.
- Heard once, on the real clock Each recording plays once, as it does on the day. If you practise with a pause button, you are practising a different test.
- Built for the 8.0 that CLB 9 needs An 8.0 allows only about five mistakes in forty. Full-length timed tests show you exactly where those five go, so you can stop losing them.
- 50 tests, never the same recording twice Every test has its own conversations, talks and lectures, so a high score means you can listen, not that you remember the script.
- Every answer explained, banded instantly Each question explains why the answer is right and why the tempting alternative is wrong, and your band appears the moment you finish.
IELTS General Training Reading
IELTS General Training Reading practice, scored on the stricter table
- 60 minutes
- 3 sections
- 40 questions
On the exam. These are not academic passages. Section 1 is short everyday texts: adverts, timetables, notices. Section 2 is workplace material: contracts, staff handbooks, training documents. Section 3 is one longer general-interest text. The texts are easier than Academic's, which is exactly why the band conversion is harsher.
- 2,000 questions across 50 full tests Everyday, workplace and general-interest texts, built to the three sections of the General Training paper, in full-length tests rather than isolated drills.
- The General Training band table, which is stricter Thirty correct answers is a 6.0 on General Training Reading and a 7.0 on Academic. For CLB 9 you need 7.0, which means around 34 out of 40. A score on the wrong table hands you a band, and a CLB, you will not get on the day.
- Accuracy where candidates get careless On a strict table, every slip on the short Section 1 items can cost you half a band. Every answer is explained, so you see whether you misread the question, the text, or the word limit.
- The real timer Sixty minutes on the clock, all three sections, no transfer time. Untimed practice tells you how well you read. Timed practice tells you your band.

LinguaMock.ai for IELTS and immigration coaching centres
Your students are chasing a CLB level or a visa threshold, and they need full mock exams to know when they are ready. Running those mocks by hand means marking every letter and essay and giving every student a Speaking slot. LinguaMock.ai takes both off your teachers' plates.

What IELTS General Training is
IELTS General Training is the version Canada requires for economic immigration. It is also widely used for migration to Australia, New Zealand and the UK, for work visas, and for training or study below degree level. It is run jointly by the British Council, IDP Education and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
If you are applying to university or for professional registration, you almost certainly need IELTS Academic instead. Listening and Speaking are identical across both versions. Reading and Writing are different, and so is the Reading band conversion.
| Section | Format | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 40 questions, 4 recorded parts, heard once | 30 min |
| Reading | 40 questions, 3 sections of everyday and workplace texts | 60 min |
| Writing | Task 1: letter (150+ words) · Task 2: essay (250+ words) | 60 min |
| Speaking | 3 parts, face to face with an examiner | 11–14 min |
IELTS General Training band scores
Each section is scored 0–9 and the overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. The Reading conversion is noticeably stricter than Academic's:
| Band | Listening (/40) | General Training Reading (/40) |
|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | 39–40 | 40 |
| 8.5 | 37–38 | 39 |
| 8.0 | 35–36 | 37–38 |
| 7.5 | 32–34 | 36 |
| 7.0 | 30–31 | 34–35 |
| 6.5 | 26–29 | 32–33 |
| 6.0 | 23–25 | 30–31 |
| 5.5 | 18–22 | 27–29 |
| 5.0 | 16–17 | 23–26 |
Conversions vary slightly between test versions, so treat these as the standard reference rather than a guarantee for one specific paper. The gap with Academic is real and consistent: thirty correct answers is a 6.0 here and a 7.0 on Academic Reading.
Rounding, and why your floor matters
Overall bands land on halves. An average of 6.25 rounds up to 6.5 and 6.75 rounds up to 7.0, but 6.625 rounds down to 6.5. For Canada the overall band does not matter at all, because IRCC converts each skill separately. Most other visa and registration requirements set an overall band and a minimum in every section. Either way, your weakest section, not your average, usually decides the application.
IELTS General Training and CLB levels for Canada
For Express Entry and other economic immigration programmes, IRCC converts each IELTS General Training skill to a Canadian Language Benchmark separately. From CLB 8 up, Listening needs a higher band than the other three skills.
| CLB | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 8.5–9.0 | 8.0–9.0 | 7.5–9.0 | 7.5–9.0 |
| 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 |
| 7 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
| 5 | 5.0 | 4.0 | 5.0 | 5.0 |
| 4 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4.0 | 4.0 |
From IRCC's published equivalences for IELTS General Training. IRCC does not accept IELTS Academic for Express Entry. Check the current IRCC language test equivalency table before relying on any number for an application.
Why 7 is the number
CLB 9 needs 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking, and 8.0 in Listening. One of Reading, Writing or Speaking at 6.5 drops that skill to CLB 8, and with it the points tied to CLB 9. Candidates often have the Listening and Reading, then fall short in Writing or Speaking, the two sections they cannot mark themselves. That is the gap LinguaMock.ai is built to close.
How to prepare
- Take a full timed test early. Knowing your real starting band, and your real CLB, changes what you should be studying.
- Learn the three letter registers. Formal, semi-formal and informal, with the openings and closings each one takes. It is the most mechanical mark on the paper.
- Cover every bullet point. A letter that misses one of the three cannot score well on Task Achievement, however good the English.
- Do not relax on Reading because the texts look easy. The conversion is stricter. Near-perfect accuracy on Section 1 is what gets you to 7.0.
- Aim Listening at 8.0, not 7.0. If you need CLB 9, Listening has the highest bar of the four.
- Prepare for Part 3, not just Part 2. Rehearsed cue-card answers do not survive an examiner who asks why.
- Work on your floor. If you need 7.0 in every skill, lifting a 6.5 is worth more than turning an 8.0 into an 8.5.
Common questions
What is LinguaMock.ai?
LinguaMock.ai is an AI-powered practice platform for IELTS General Training, IELTS Academic, TEF and TEF Canada. It runs full, timed mock tests and scores every section. Speaking is run by an examiner that asks follow-up questions based on your answers, and Writing is scored on the official criteria.
What IELTS score do I need for CLB 9?
8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Reading, Writing and Speaking, all on IELTS General Training. CLB 7 needs 6.0 in all four.
Is there an AI IELTS Speaking test that asks follow-up questions?
Yes. The LinguaMock.ai Speaking examiner asks each follow-up based on what you just said, so no two conversations are the same. You hear each question and see it on screen.
How accurate are the band scores?
Listening and Reading are marked against the answer key and converted on the published General Training band tables. Writing and Speaking are LinguaMock.ai's AI-assisted estimates, built on the four official criteria and designed to land close to a real examiner's band. These are not official IELTS results and will not appear on any record held by the British Council, IDP or Cambridge.
Can it help me get from 6.5 to 7 in Writing?
That is what it is built for. Each of the four criteria gets its own band and reasoning, so you see which one is holding you at 6.5, and the feedback shows what that criterion needs to look like at 7. Moving the band still takes practice. The feedback tells you where to put it.
General Training or Academic: which do I need?
General Training for Canadian immigration, work visas and training below degree level. Academic for university study and most professional registration. The organisation you are applying to specifies which. If it does not say, ask before you book, because the papers are not interchangeable.
Is General Training easier than Academic?
The Reading texts are more everyday, but the band conversion is stricter to compensate, so you need more correct answers for the same band. Listening and Speaking are identical. In practice the two are closer in difficulty than candidates expect.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. LinguaMock.ai runs in the browser on iPhone, Android, tablets and laptops, with nothing to install. Speaking needs a working microphone, and a quiet room helps more than an expensive headset.
Is LinguaMock.ai free?
There is a free 7-day trial that includes Practice Test 1 of IELTS General Training: all four sections, including a full Speaking test with the AI examiner. No card is required.
Can coaching centres use LinguaMock.ai?
Yes. With an Enterprise account a centre can create student accounts, assign tests, allocate credits and see every student's results in one place. Seats rotate between batches.
